![]() ![]() The side missions really do disappoint and only really seem to serve as chores which increase your Karma rank. They range from drawing some graffiti, finding audio logs, seeking out undercover agents all ultimately leading to Far Cry style outpost (territory) takeovers. It just doesn’t seem right that the core story is so short especially when you consider the quite dull side missions that are there to fill your time. That’s not to say that anything is particularly bad per se it’s just devoid of new ideas and for want of a better, less used phrase, playing it safe.Oddly, for a game of this nature, the core campaign is surprisingly short – a mix of new power acquiring, running after people, killing people in multi-opponent matchups or one on one boss fights. It’s a videogame so this sort of thing is to be expected but by the time you’ve seen it a third time in the course of your first playthrough then you find yourself rolling your eyes slightly and wishing for something just a little bit more. The minute to minute gameplay is standard fare for an action hero open world game (think Prototype) which unfortunately towards the end leans too heavily on the gameplay tropes that are built into the game, for example find three of these things to gain more superpowers, then go and take on the big baddy. If he’s changing the world one random piece of graffiti at a time (an embarrassment of a mini-game) or abusing the DUP’s emergency conduit hotline he’s usually doing it with an attitude or a swagger which in no way warms you to the character or his plight – he really seems to come off the opposite of what the team appear to have been going for. Whip it real goodOne of the core issues with the story is the lead character, whilst voiced impeccably by the always reliable Troy Baker, he really isn’t likeable. This is a step too far for young Delsin and a tale of outright revenge begins complete with smoke, neon, video and concrete powers, all of which are spectacularly rendered on screen. So set on her goals is she that she will do pretty much anything to anyone to get to the conduits – sadly for Delsin this means that she might hurt some of his friends to get to him now he’s acquired his new abilities. The DUP were formed to control the “problem” and their lead Brooke Augustine is a grey-suit wearing, stern faced, vindictive so and so (with her own conduit powers) whose sole purpose is to find and imprison all conduits. Naturally though conduits are portrayed as bad bad people, freaks of nature if you will and the people have rallied against their kind. Upon assisting them, one of the conduits power is transferred and things take a slightly superpowers turn for our hero. Our adventure starts off slowly, introducing the player to the characters and the gameplay mechanics but soon escalates as a prison bus turns over spilling out some nasty conduits, coincidentally near where Delsin and his brother were chatting about Delsin’s behaviour. ![]() Billed as a fresh start for the Infamous franchise with a gradually increasing buzz surrounding it, could this be the exclusive title that really shows off their shiny (potentially now a bit dusty) new console? You play as Delsin Rowe, a not-so-loveable rogue who stumbles upon his ability to absorb the powers of other conduits think Rogue from X-Men. As a result there are now an awful lot of PS4 owners out in the world wondering why they forked out £350 on launch and here is where Infamous Second Son steps up into the limelight. Sadly though for all the fanfare and internet forum shouting nothing in the PS4 line-up has shone Killzone was gorgeous yet hugely underwhelming to play and the other big release, Knack, was just flat out poor. Literally millions of PS4s have been shipped since the rather huge launch back in November and fanboys the world over have been heralding this as the new dawn of gaming – native 1080p, 60fps, amazing particle effects and so on, the sky’s the limit. Put simply, Infamous: Second Son has an awful lot riding on it. ![]()

![]() ![]() Until two years ago, most games were still written for Dos, even those running under Windows 95. This was also true with Dos when it first appeared, and games developers went straight to the metal instead of using the BIOS or DOS API routines. This requires a lot of code between your App and the video card hardware and this 'Thick Api' is why Windows output routines are slow. Windows's strength is that it works with many different monitors, video cards and in multiple resolutions and colour depths. Version 3 BTW is the one built into Win NT 4.0. ![]() ![]() The arcade game played like a side-scrolling beat-em-up, sort of like a combination of Spartan X and Double Dragon (or Streets of Rage). Now I will turn to games that had a (usually exclusive) NES version based off the arcade version, but not a direct port. Up to this point I have been comparing arcade ports to their originals. And this is playing it in MAME, never mind a loud arcade! In Life Force, there is a fair amount of digitized speech, but it intrudes far too frequently and it is often difficult to make out the words. All these arcade games use FM Synthesis for their music, but I find the FM synthesis for most of these games to be underwhelming compared to the more distinct PSG-based NES music. Contra is an exception and its arrangement sounds very good. Usually the sound effects in Konami's arcade games are good, but they often drown out the music. The Famicom version, Salamander, allows you to have three option pods whereas the NES version only allows two. In the NES version, you can save power up levels and choose how you want to upgrade your ship. It can be difficult at first to distinguish the various powerup icons. In the arcade, if an enemy leaves a power up, you have to take what is given. One other advantage the NES has over the arcade is the use of the Gradius-style powerup system. The arcade version has a nice mini-boss homage to Gradius lacking in the NES. The final boss for stage 6 is far less menacing than the NES version of this boss. Arcade stage 5 is really short and non-descript. Arcade stage 2 becomes the first half of NES stage 6 and arcade stage 4 becomes NES stage 2. The NES version relegates the less impressive bosses in arcade stages 3 and 4 to mini-boss status in NES stages 3 and 2, respectively. Their bosses have no counterparts in the arcade version. ![]() They are two of the most impressive stages as well, as stage 4 sends you through what looks like a living entity and stage 5 sends you through an Egyptian pyramid. The two versions have a nearly identical first, third and last stages, but the NES version's stages 4 and 5 have no arcade counterpart. ![]() The NES version took it as a template and improved on it quite a bit. Life Force for the Arcade has some very nice graphics. Metal Gear for the NES is a mess, Metal Gear 2 looks the part of a sequel but that is about it, and TMNT for the NES just did not leverage the license very well and was unfairly difficult to boot. When Konami does not do things in-house or hands a project off to the B-Team, the results are often disappointing. Its NES equivalent, Rush 'N Attack, has some difficulty balance issues. Green Beret on the Famicom Disk System is a very good port with very catchy music lacking in the arcade version. While the NES version has more stages, it has a severe limit on the number of enemies on the screen and the stages get monotonous. However, I do not consider it as superior to its arcade original because the arcade original is extremely colorful like the TV show, well-animated and supports four players. TMNT 2 - The Arcade Game for the NES is without a doubt the best contemporary port of the arcade title. When they do things in house, the results are usually pretty amazing. While I am here, I would like to praise Konami for handling its ports. The Famicom Disk System version of the game, Final Commando, is not quite as impressive as the NES due to the vertical-only scrolling and lack of the first mission. NES Jackal is another great Konami game, and like Contra and Super C and Life Force is a two player simultaneous game. Arcade Top Gunner (Jackal in World versions) is one long stage, no breaks, no bosses (except at the very end and its pretty underwhelming) It gets very repetitive after a while. Jackal for the Arcade came earlier (1986) than either Contra (1987) or Super Contra (1988). The NES version gives you a break, and the Famicom version has short scenes that propel the story. Also, the last four levels in the arcade progress without a break. The level 5 and 6 bosses are treated more like the level 5 tanks. The NES's Level 3 boss is much cooler than the arcade's. ![]() The graphics use many more colors but everything appears small. Enemies are on top of you without fair warning. Using a vertically oriented monitor as the arcade original did makes sense in an overhead shooter but not in a sidescroller. The bosses are great (except level 7, which is something of a let down, but is non-existent in the arcade version.)Ĭompared to the NES version, the arcade original has very short stages and they are very simplistic. It has good graphics (especially the Famicom version, which has animation inthe backgrounds in level 1, 5 & 8) and excellent music for its time. Contra is widely recognized as a classic on the NES. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Bradley is completely winded by the news, the sound around her zones out as she walks back into the studio with a dazed look, shuffles past everyone, turns around and breaks the news to all her colleagues - this scene is entirely silenced to emphasize the shock of the moment until Fred speaks this highlights the audacity of what he says: ‘Let’s take a moment to honor and remember Hannah, our dear colleague.” Fred is one of the men that made Hannah feel that way.īradley rings Chip and explains that the interview is off and drops the news that Hannah is dead. I’ve been visiting BF1 Stats since the launch of the Early Enlister edition of Battlefield 1, and though PC numbers were behind both consoles, things could have gone either way at launch. Knowing all that, I never thought I'd actually see the day when PC could be in the same position PS3 was last generation the platform with the lowest player numbers in a Battlefield game. It’s the game that – for the first time - was identical across PC and consoles, old-gen not included.īattlefield 4 was the game that brought 64-player matches to consoles, the full-fat Battlefield experience you could previously only get on PC. Nothing, however, will be remembered in quite the same way Battlefield 4 will. Battlefield 3 suffered from the same problem the pre-Bad Company games had: the idea that consoles could only manage an inferior version of the main event. It was now possible to play a solid Battlefield game on something other than a PC.īattlefield 3 followed this trend, but unlike Bad Company 2, the game was a traditional Battlefield numbered sequel, not a side project with low player counts and watered-down mechanics. The sequel, Bad Company 2, did release on consoles and PC, of course, but by that point things had changed forever. So much so, in fact, the original Bad Company never came to PC. It wasn’t until the developer took a bit of a break and came back with the Bad Company off-shoot, a new sub-series where the sole goal was to figure out how to make this type of game work on a console. Sure, DICE made Battlefield games for consoles at the time, like Modern Combat, but they paled in comparison to the real thing: the PC version. Before the rise of consoles, Battlefield games were largely considered one of the perks of owning a PC for the stellar multiplayer sandbox experience no other shooter could offer, certainly not on consoles. Perhaps since its inception, the Battlefield series has always called PC home. If you were to choose a version to buy today, the one with the biggest number of players would be the one to get." My wife, for instance, hates other fighting games as she doesn't like memorizing moves and is NOT a gamer aside from the simplest of games (ie, pac man, space invaders). Although the reviewer from Common Sense thinks the control scheme is"odd", this is the most playable title in the fighting world of gaming with no moves or inputs to memorize unique to each fighter, but a universal control layout that applies to each charecter universally.
